This exceptional and very rare antique grease lamp, represents early primitive lighting technology for burning animal fat, tallow, whale oil, or other greases. Entirely hand-forged from wrought iron, it features an extremely rare, highly uncommon adjustable height mechanism using an iron pin inserted through one of six holes in the central shaft—a distinct departure from the more typical friction-slide or ratchet systems seen in similar lamps. This pin-and-hole design allows precise positioning of the reservoir tray for optimal flame height and light output. We have never come across another even remotely similar. Surprising, as the adjustment system is far sturdier and more reliable.

The diamond-shaped tray/pan includes four distinct wick spouts, providing multi-flame illumination for brighter light than standard single- or dual-spout examples. A hand-wrought iron chain securely tethers the adjustment pin to the tray to prevent loss. The tripod base terminates in pointed feet for stable placement on surfaces or potential insertion into soft ground, hearth, or soil—suggesting versatility for indoor hearth use, workshops, or even outdoor applications. A looped handle on the shaft allows easy carrying or hanging.

This is an outstanding display piece for collectors of early American lighting, primitive ironwork, blacksmith artifacts, or colonial-era tools.

Origin: Likely American colonial or early republic period, with possible influences from Scottish/Irish crusie lamp designs adapted for tallow or grease burning.

Age: We're guessing that this piece is 18th century at the very least, very possibly 17th century based on hand-forged construction, design features, and comparison to documented examples.

Material: Entirely hand-wrought iron (pan, shaft, tripod base, chain, pin, and handle). No evidence of modern welding or machining.

Condition: Good antique condition with expected rust, oxidation, and aged patina that enhances authenticity. Structurally sound with no breaks, repairs, or missing components. Minor pitting and surface wear consistent with age and use; pointed feet remain sharp.
