Presented here is an authentic piece of late 19th-century Holy Land history: an Olive Wood Covered Passover Haggadah, printed in Jerusalem in 1897 (Hebrew year תרנ"ז).

The Historical Importance

This volume was produced by the famed H.M. (Shmuel) Zuckerman Press, one of the most important Jewish printing houses in Jerusalem during the Ottoman period. This edition features a parallel English translation, specifically designed for the Jewish diaspora in the UK and America who were beginning to visit and support the burgeoning communities in Jerusalem.

The Kirschenbaum Provenance

A defining feature of this specific copy is the rare violet stamp on the inner leaf for "Wittwe Scheindel Kirschenbaum, Jerusalem (Palestine)." Widow Scheindel Kirschenbaum was a prominent 19th-century Jerusalem merchant specializing in high-end olive wood artifacts. Finding her stamp in a Zuckerman-printed book provides a direct link to the specific workshops that defined the "Old Yishuv" craft movement.

  • Covers: Hand-finished Olive Wood with hand-inked Gothic "Jerusalem" title.

  • Content: Full Seder liturgy in Hebrew with 19th-century English translation.

  • Dimensions: 4" x 6.25"

  • Date: 1897 (Dated תרנ"ז on title page).

Condition: Antiquarian Good. The olive wood boards are structurally sound with a beautiful, deep honey-toned patina. The original blue cloth spine shows heavy fraying and wear consistent with its 125+ year age. The interior pages show typical "Seder use" including scattered wine stains and age-toning; these are not considered defects by many Judaica collectors but rather evidence of the book's ritual history. The binding is shaken but remains intact.
