This is a striking pair of vintage brass Shabbat candlesticks. Each candlestick features an ornate brass construction with intricate openwork designs incorporating traditional Jewish motifs such as pomegranates, grapes, leaves, and swirling vines, symbolizing abundance and fertility. One candlestick has the Hebrew inscription "שבת קודש" (Shabbat Kodesh, meaning "Holy Sabbath") prominently engraved within the decorative band near the top. The stems are cylindrical with gold-toned brass finish, accented by black enamel rings and textured bands for added detail. The bases are flared and filigreed with similar fruit and floral patterns; note that one base appears to have light brass color, while the other has a darker brown tone, possibly due to variations in manufacturing or patina development over time.
Included are two matching amber glass hurricane shades with scalloped rims and a warm, honey-yellow hue, which fit snugly into the candle holders. However, based on comparisons with similar items, these glass shades may not be original to the set, as identical brass designs are often seen without them—though they complement the overall appearance beautifully and add a mid-century flair. The candlesticks are designed to hold standard taper candles or tea lights in the top sockets.
They stand approximately 10-12 inches tall with the shades attached, making them substantial yet elegant tabletop accents.
Origin: Made in Israel, by Oppenheim. Similar designs are associated with brands like Wainberg or other mid-century Israeli metalworkers known for blending traditional motifs with modern brutalist or ornamental styles.
Age: Vintage, estimated 1960s to 1980s based on style, materials, and comparable listings. The brass patina and design elements align with mid-century Israeli exports popular during that era.
Condition: Good vintage condition overall. The brass shows natural patina, minor tarnish, and light surface wear consistent with age and use, adding to its authentic character. No major dents, breaks, or structural issues noted. The glass shades are intact with no chips or cracks, though they exhibit minor scratches and bubbles typical of handmade glass. One decorative band shows slight verdigris (green oxidation) in crevices, and the differing base colors may indicate mismatched enamel or aging.
