Up for sale is an authentic late 19th-century American/English salt-glazed stoneware beer or ale bottle. This heavy, cylindrical stoneware vessel stands approximately 9.5 inches tall with a 3.5-inch diameter base and weighs a solid 2 lbs 10.6 oz. The shoulder features a sharp, clear cold-stamp impressed "E. JACKSON" in clean serif block typography.

Crafted from dense, heavy buff clay with a textured salt-glaze finish, this bottle was thrown on a potter's wheel and finished with a traditional applied thick sloped collar/blob lip designed to hold a cork secured with wire or twine. The base is flat with an unglazed, dark wire-severed bottom typical of 19th-century pottery production.

Origin & Age

  • Origin: American / British (Pottery manufacturing trade, likely produced for a merchant or tavern keeper)

  • Age: Circa 1860s – 1880s (Late 19th Century, Victorian Era)

Material

  • High-fired stoneware clay with a natural salt glaze finish.

Condition

  • Overall: Good antique condition with normal production and age-related wear.

  • Rim/Lip: Exhibits some vintage chips loss on the inner top edge of the lip and below (see photos); the rest of the rolled collar remains intact with a smooth glaze over original mold marks.

  • Body: Clean shoulder stamp ("E. JACKSON"). Features a single deep, circular firing flaw (in-factory kiln blowhole/stone pop) on the lower side where an iron impurity burned out during firing—a classic hallmark of early hand-thrown stoneware rather than post-factory damage.

  • Base: Unmarked, flat wire-cut base showing natural age discoloration, shelf wear, and atmospheric soot/dirt deposit from decades of storage. No structural cracks or post-manufacturing repairs.

Authenticity Assessment

This piece displays all the classic markers of genuine mid-to-late 19th-century salt-glazed stoneware. The "E. JACKSON" mark is a true cold stamp impressed directly into the wet clay prior to firing, creating crisp, sharp indentations with slight clay displace-lines around the letters—unlike modern cast reproductions which have shallow, rounded lettering. The salt glaze demonstrates characteristic "orange peel" texture caused by throwing sodium chloride into the kiln at high heat. The underside exhibits distinct wire-severing striations on an unglazed foot ring, and the body includes authentic hand-throwing rings along with an in-factory iron pop-out/kiln mark.
