Up for sale is a wonderful original antique cast iron still bank in the shape of a U.S. Mailbox. This piece was manufactured by the Kenton Toy Company of Kenton, Ohio, and dates to the early 20th century (circa 1912-1931). It features the classic "PULL DOWN" articulated mail slot and a two-tone paint scheme of red over black.

This particular example features charming hand-painted lettering on the front that reads "No. Reading MA," suggesting it was used as a promotional item or souvenir in North Reading, Massachusetts. The bank is made of heavy sand-cast iron and remains in its original, uncleaned condition with a beautiful aged patina. It is secured with the original flathead screw.

Authenticity Assessment

This bank demonstrates several strong markers of authenticity for a Kenton piece from the early 20th century:

  • Hardware: The bank is secured with a single, oxidized flathead screw. Modern reproductions almost universally use Phillips-head screws or modern alloy fasteners.

  • Casting Quality: The surface shows the fine, sand-cast "orange peel" texture typical of early 1900s American foundries. The seams are tight but not perfectly flush, consistent with period production.

  • Paint & Patina: The two-tone red and black paint exhibits natural "alligatoring" and honest shelf wear. The hand-painted "No. Reading MA" shows authentic age-toning in the pigment, consistent with lead-based paints of the era rather than modern acrylics.

  • Base Design: The bottom features three distinct oval casting holes, which is the correct configuration for the Kenton #837 model.
