This is an authentic 19th-century Victorian cast iron wall-hanging "Self-Closing" match safe manufactured by Sargent & Co. in New Haven, Connecticut.

Designed for safety during the era of friction matches, this piece features a gravity/spring-tensioned hinged lid that automatically closes when released to protect stored friction matches from stray sparks. The lid is embossed in bold relief with: "SELF CLOSING FOR MATCHES & C. SARGENT & CO. NEW HAVEN".

The underside of the box retains its molded, diamond-patterned strike plate for igniting friction matches. The top mounting crest features two pre-drilled holes for wall hanging.

Authenticity Assessment

This piece displays key physical characteristics consistent with 19th-century cast iron manufacture:

  1. Molded Relief Lettering: The lettering is crisp and cast directly into the iron plate rather than stamped or modern machine-etched.

  2. Integrated Strike Surface: The waffle/diamond grid pattern on the underside was specifically designed to strike 19th-century "Lucifer" or "Locofoco" friction matches.

  3. Hinge Construction: The pin-and-barrel spring hinge assembly uses historical wrought steel pin fittings typical of late 19th-century hardware production.

  4. Surface Finish & Patina: The surface exhibits natural age-appropriate oxidation and honest wear to the original japanning rather than artificially distressed modern paint.
