A fine example of mid-19th-century American primitive lighting, this tall lard or "grease" lamp is constructed of hand-soldered sheet tin. It features a characteristic wide, flat wick tube designed specifically to accommodate the heavy wicks required for burning animal fats or lard. The lamp stands on a deep saucer-style drip pan base, connected by a cylindrical shaft to the fuel fount.

Design & Construction The lamp exhibits a robust, oversized strap handle, approximately 1.5" at its widest point, allowing for easy transport throughout a period home. The construction shows clear evidence of early tinsmithing, including visible solder seams and a rolled edge on the saucer base.

Condition: Excellent primitive condition with a desirable "dry" original surface.
