For the serious collector of 19th-century domestic technology, this is an exceptionally large Antique Early American 4-Sided Tin Candle Lantern. Standing a full 15.5 inches tall, this "guarded" model features a heavy-duty wire cage designed to protect the four glass panes during outdoor or marine use.
The pyramidal chimney is expertly hand-punched with star-and-solar motifs for heat dissipation. This specimen is in remarkable "as-found" condition, retaining its original historical patina and factory finish. The stationary candle socket is firmly integrated into the base, and the side-hinged door operates smoothly with its original latch.
