This is a stunning 19th-century Besamim (Spice) holder used during the Havdalah ceremony to mark the end of the Sabbath. The tower features intricate hand-chased repoussé work depicting lush floral roses and foliage throughout the central cylinder and scalloped base.
The upper rim features a hand-engraved Hebrew inscription: "בורא מיני בשמים" (Borei Minei Besamim), which translates to "Creator of various kinds of spices." This piece features a traditional friction-fit top, allowing the spice chamber to be accessed by a simple pull-apart tension closure. The very top of the spire features a threaded post, indicating it originally held a decorative finial, likely in the shape of a flag or a small bird.
