This is an exceptional example of a 19th-century gimbaled whale oil lamp, likely designed for marine or shipboard use. The lamp features a spherical font mounted on a pivoting U-shaped bracket, allowing the light to remain upright despite the motion of a vessel or if carried by hand.

The font is equipped with a classic double-wick whale oil burner made of brass. The construction is primarily of heavy sheet metal (tin/tole) with a saucer to provide stability. The saucer base includes a finger loop for easy transport and a small hanging ring on the underside edge, suggesting it could be wall-mounted.

Origin & Age

  • Origin: United States (New England tradition)

  • Period: Circa 1830–1850 (Early American)

Material

  • Body: Tole/Sheet Metal (Tin)

  • Burner: Brass double-wick assembly

  • Wicks: Original-style cotton fragments present

Condition Report

  • Overall: Honest, untouched historical patina. The surface shows a deep, aged "dry" oxidation consistent with 19th-century metalware.

  • Font: Several small pinholes are visible on the underside of the font (see close-up images). These are typical of "tinned" iron of this age due to internal moisture or fuel corrosion over 170+ years.

  • Functional: The gimbal mechanism moves freely. The burner is intact with moderate verdigris.

  • Note: Being sold as a historical artifact; not tested for fuel-tightness.
