Crafted from solid hardwood (likely beech or oak), it features a traditional gear-and-tongue mechanism. When the handle is rotated, the wooden reed strikes the hand-cut teeth of the internal cog, producing a sharp, loud "clacking" sound.

The piece exhibits authentic signs of age, including a deep, natural patina and hand-fitted joinery. Unlike modern mass-produced plastic versions, this grogger reflects the "primitive" aesthetic favored by collectors of folk art and religious artifacts.
