Purchased from J Greenstein auction house in NY, this exquisite antique Italian (most likely) miniature Judenstern (meaning "Jewish star" in German) Sabbath hanging oil lamp is crafted from solid brass with a warm, aged patina. The lamp features an six-pointed star-shaped oil reservoir, where each pointed tip serves as a wick holder for multi-wick lighting, allowing for multiple flames to illuminate the space. A cylindrical baluster shaft extends upward to a curved hanging hook for suspension, while a separate drip pan (bowl) is connected below via a short chain to catch excess oil drips. The construction shows hand-cast details, including subtle ridges on the shaft and pointed spikes that are sharp but worn from age. Minor imperfections, such as solder and light corrosion, add to its authenticity without detracting from functionality. Measuring 12.5 inches in overall length (from hook to base) and 6 inches in diameter from one wick tip to the opposite, this compact size makes it a rarer miniature variant compared to larger examples.
Age: 19th century (circa 1800-1890), based on the style, brass composition, and comparison to documented examples from German and Dutch Jewish communities.Â
Origin: Most likely Italy or the Netherlands, where Judenstern lamps were commonly produced for Jewish families from the 15th to late 19th centuries. These were everyday items in Jewish homes before the widespread adoption of candles or electric lighting.
