For sale is an 18th to early 19th-century hand-forged wrought iron spring-jaw candle holder and rush light stand, measuring approximately 20 inches tall with a 12-inch wide tripod base.

Unlike standard flat-jaw rush holders designed strictly for dried rushes, this early American/European blacksmith-crafted lighting device features curved, semi-tubular jaws that form a round clamping socket when closed. This spring-loaded mechanism was engineered to secure dipped tallow candles, beeswax tapers, or pine splints of varying diameters.

AUTHENTICITY ASSESSMENT

This lighting device exhibits clear pre-industrial origin:

1. Iron Oxidation & Layering: Features deep micro-pitting and a natural iron oxide patina developed over centuries of atmospheric exposure.

2. Blacksmith Fabrication: Mortise-and-tenon construction, hand-punched pivot hole, and hand-drawn tripod legs show clear signs of manual anvil hammering—free from modern cold-rolled steel edges or modern welds.

3. Organic Wax Residue: Genuine, oxidized tallow/beeswax deposits along the jaw hinge and stem are deeply embedded into the porous iron surface.
