An exceptional late 18th to early 19th-century hand-forged wrought iron four-wick open grease/fat lamp (often referred to in early American lighting references as a square or four-way Crusie lamp).
This substantial sized primitive lighting device features a square forged iron reservoir pan with four turned-up corner wick troughs/spouts, allowing up to four individual wicks soaked in animal fat, tallow, or lard to burn simultaneously for heightened illumination. Rising from the rear edge of the reservoir is a broad, hand-hammered vertical upright strap handle attached via two prominent, hand-hammered rosehead iron rivets.
The top arch of the strap extends into a rolled/curled finial hood with a central pierced eyelet. Passing through the top eyelet is a heavy hand-hammered iron swivel loop that holds a twisted iron suspension shaft terminating in a hanging hook.

Authenticity Assessment
This lamp displays key physical markers that verify authentic late 18th to early 19th-century blacksmith manufacturing:
-
Poured/Hammered Riveting: The vertical upright strap is secured to the square reservoir pan using two hand-hammered, irregular rosehead iron rivets with flattened, hand-stenciled heads and visible forge deformation on the reverse side.
-
Twisted Iron Construction: Both the hanging rod/hook and the original wick pick are crafted from hand-drawn square-stock iron that was twist-forged while red hot, exhibiting minor variations in turn tighteness and width along the twist.
-
Corner Spout Hammering: The turned-up corner wick troughs show explicit signs of hand-hammered flaring with slight asymmetry between spouts, rather than uniform machine stamping or modern reproduction casting seams.
-
Patina & Metal Grain: The surface features genuine atmospheric oxidation and fine linear slag grain visible within the wrought iron, characteristic of hand-puddled 18th-century iron stock.
