This is a scarce, beautifully preserved vintage Art Deco telescoping pocket savings bank produced by the renowned Chicago Thrift Co. of Chicago, Illinois. Issued as a promotional advertising premium for the Almira Savings & Loan Association (located at 3460 W. North Ave., Chicago, Illinois, established 1907), this ingenious mechanical pocket bank features a three-tier collapsible column design that expands to accept or dispense coins.

The top face showcases a vibrant, embossed orange and gold enameled medallion bearing an American eagle graphic alongside the bank's historical address details. When fully compressed, the item stands at a compact 1.5 inches tall for pocket transport. When extended to its full 3-inch height, it reveals a clean coin slot built into the upper tier segment. The underside of the base is crisp and clearly stamped: "Chicago Thrift Co, Chicago, Patented 117935".

Authenticity Assessment

This piece is believed to be authentic, exhibiting all the core manufacturing markers of an original mid-century production by the Chicago Thrift Co. The base stamping features the precise sans-serif typeface and depth characteristic of the firm's period die-stamps. A close inspection of the seams and fluted columns reveals the tight tolerances and rolled-edge metalwork that imitation banks cannot easily replicate. Furthermore, the natural age-patina inside the barrel and the authentic chemical composition of the hard-fired enamel insert verify its true late-1930s to 1940s vintage.
