Historical Brilliance from Warsaw's Premier Silversmith

An exceptional, museum-grade pair of late 19th-century Eastern European electroplated silver Shabbat candlesticks, proudly crafted by the legendary foundry Norblin & Co. (Norblin i S-ka) in Warsaw, Poland. Dating from the circa 1890–1914 period, these pillars represent the height of historical Jewish ritual metalware production in the region.

Exquisite Design & Craftsmanship

Standing an imposing 12 inches tall, each pillar sits upon a heavy, architectural stepped square base. The columns are brilliantly worked with a classic Russian Baroque aesthetic, featuring hand-chased and repoussé-stamped clusters of dimensional cabbage roses, stippled tracking, and stylized layered leaf collars. The set comes complete with its two original, removable matching circular bobeches featuring chased decorative rims. Both bases retain their authentic, crisp factory hallmarks: the famous stamped oval enclosing "NORBLIN i S / GALW. / WARSZAWA" accented by the Imperial Russian double-headed eagle emblem.

Date Range & Hallmark Verification

The bottom bases of both pillars bear a crisp, struck oval hallmark enclosing the text "NORBLIN i S / GALW. / WARSZAWA" flanked by a small Imperial Russian double-headed eagle crest.

  • "GALW." is an abbreviation for Galwaniczny (Galvanic / Electroplated), denoting the sophisticated electroplating method utilized by the foundry.

  • The presence of the Imperial Russian Eagle indicates production prior to the collapse of the Russian Empire and Poland's independence. Specifically, this variation of the oval hallmark was utilized between circa 1890 and 1914.

Condition Report & As-Found Patina

In keeping with the strict preferences of advanced antiquarians, this pair is offered in its genuine, "as-found" untouched state. The original silver plating shows beautiful, honest age-toning, highlights, and a warm golden under-patina where the brass core peeks through high-relief points.

  • Structural Note: One of the tiered decorative leaf "skirt" elements on the upper column shaft is detached/broken from the main column wall. It turns freely if handled; however, it can be easily aligned and set properly to sit completely straight, stable, and flush for display. Once positioned statically on a mantle or holiday table, the variation is visually imperceptible, and the column remains entirely upright and safe for supporting candles. There are no other major dents, breaks, or deep gouges across either pillar.
