This is an exceptional example of a 19th-century IXL Safe Still Bank, manufactured by the renowned J. & E. Stevens Co. of Cromwell, Connecticut. Cast in heavy iron, this "safe" style bank features the prominent "IXL" logo (a Victorian shorthand for "I Excel") in a raised cartouche on the front door. The piece retains a remarkably high percentage of its original vibrant green japanned paint, which has aged to a deep, desirable verdigris tone.
The bank features a classic Gothic-arched double-door motif on the front, despite being a single-door opening. The top contains a single coin slot, and the underside is finished with a decorative lattice-work base and a central turn-screw for access. A true staple for any serious American cast iron or still bank collector.

Authenticity Assessment
This IXL bank is believed to be a period original. Authenticity is confirmed by the following markers:
-
Casting Quality: The interior shows the "tight" pebbled texture and slight mold-parting lines characteristic of late 19th-century sand casting.
-
Assembly: The use of a singular, flush-seated flat-head screw on the base is consistent with J. & E. Stevens production methods.
-
Paint Profile: The green pigment shows natural "crazing" and oxidation that modern reproductions cannot convincingly replicate.
-
Weight: The density of the iron (over 1 lb) matches the known heavy-gauge specs of the original production run.
