This is an authentic, highly collectible antique Victorian to Edwardian era cast iron still safe penny bank, prominently embossed "COIN DEPOSIT BANK" on the front door panel. Manufactured by the Grey Iron Casting Company of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, this piece beautifully represents early 20th-century American toy manufacturing craftsmanship.
The bank features deep, intricate relief-molded scroll and foliage designs on both flanking side panels and the reverse side. The top surface features a structural arched lift handle flanked by a wide center coin slot. When the handle is raised, a small physical barrier frame shifts inside to safely receive a coin deposit while preventing contents from being shaken out when inverted. The underside of the base features an exposed central structural screw post fastened with a square nut and is clearly cast with the abbreviated patent pending mark "PAT PDG."

Condition Report
The bank is in Excellent Antique Condition given its age of over 120 years. The historical nickel plating has aged into a wonderful, dry, authentic metallic patina that collectors deeply appreciate. The surface has not been cleaned or polished, intentionally preserving its genuine historical character. The casting lines are tightly matched, the relief details remain crisp and clear. The base retains its original structural integrity with no fractures, cracks, or repairs noted.
Authenticity Assessment
An examination of the item reveals excellent indicators of authenticity. The internal texture of the cast iron along the un-plated underside shows an authentic, tight granular composition typical of vintage late 19th and early 20th-century American foundry work rather than the coarse, pit-pocked, or chemically induced faux-rust finishes commonly found on modern reproductions. Furthermore, the assembly hardware features a correct, period-appropriate square retaining nut rather than a modern hexagonal or cross-point fastener. The clean, crisp seam lines and the precision layout of the embossed "PAT PDG." lettering confirm this piece is a genuine turn-of-the-century casting.
