This antique Torah pointer, known as a Yad (Hebrew for "hand"), is a traditional Jewish item used during synagogue services to follow the text in the Torah scroll without directly touching the parchment. The design prevents oils from the skin from damaging the delicate vellum. This particular Yad measures approximately 6 inches (15 cm) in length and weighs 3.3 ounces (93.5 grams), making it a compact and portable piece suitable for personal or communal use.

The pointer features a finely cast miniature hand at the tip, with an extended index finger for precise pointing. The shaft is adorned with a series of bulbous, segmented decorative elements, giving it an ornate yet understated appearance. The surface shows a thick, crusty patina with greenish-blue oxidation (verdigris), characteristic of aged copper alloys exposed to air and handling over time. This patina enhances its vintage aesthetic and authenticity, without detracting from its functionality.

Ideal for collectors of Judaica, religious artifacts, or antique metalwork, this Yad combines historical significance with artistic craftsmanship. It would make a meaningful addition to a synagogue or display collection.

Material: Bronze, with possible brass elements (copper-zinc). The material is confirmed by the item's weight, metallic sheen in areas where patina is worn, and the typical greenish-blue oxidation seen on aged bronze or brass objects. Not tested for exact composition, but consistent with antique Judaica pieces from the period.

Origin: Likely Middle Eastern or possibly North African, with very strong indications of Yemenite craftsmanship. Yemenite Yads often feature simple yet elegant designs with bulbous motifs and are commonly made from brass or bronze, reflecting the region's metalworking traditions.

Age: Estimated late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880-1920), based on the style, patina thickness, and comparison to similar documented antique Yads. The heavy oxidation and crusty texture suggest decades of natural aging, consistent with items from this era that were handcrafted and used in religious contexts.

Condition: Very good antique condition. The patina is thick and even, with a crusty feel, indicating authentic age without signs of over-cleaning or restoration. Minor wear from use is present, such as slight discoloration and small spots of brighter metal where handled, but there are no dents, breaks, or repairs. The pointing finger and decorative elements remain intact and sharp. Overall, well-preserved for a ritual object of this vintage, ready for display or careful use.
