Featured is an exceptionally rare miniature cast iron farm thresher produced by the renowned Arcade Manufacturing Co. This piece represents the McCormick-Deering (International Harvester) industrial thresher. Unlike later reproductions, this piece features the distinctively heavy casting and peened axle ends characteristic of early 20th-century American toy manufacturing. The toy retains a significant amount of its original cold-painted red finish, which has aged to a desirable, darkened patina.
Origin: Freeport, Illinois, USA
Manufacturer: Arcade Manufacturing Company
Material: Cast Iron
Age: circa 1925–1932
Dimensions: Approx. 3" L x 1.5" H
Condition: Good Antique Condition. The toy is structurally sound with no cracks or repairs. The original red paint shows honest play wear and thinning, primarily on high points, which confirms its age and authenticity. The wheels rotate freely on their original iron axles. The casting is hollow and clean, lacking the "pitting" or grainy texture often found in modern recasts.
Authenticity Assessment
This item passes the key markers for an original Arcade casting. First, the seam lines are tight and well-ground; modern reproductions often have thick, sloppy seams. Second, the paint shows "cold-paint" characteristics where the pigment sits on the surface rather than being thick and "enameled" like modern sprays. Third, the axle ends are "mushroomed" or peened by hand, a labor-intensive process abandoned by modern manufacturers. Finally, the interior casting is relatively smooth, indicative of the fine-grain sand molds used by Arcade in the 1920s.
