This rare, original triptych-style L'Shanah Tovah (Rosh Hashanah) greeting postcard dates from the ca. 1920s Interwar period. Published by the famous Jewish publishing house Verlag "Central" in Warsaw, Poland (marked C.W. and Verlag "Central" on the back), this card depicts a charming modern theme: sending New Year wishes via early radio technology and microphone.
The front artwork is divided into three distinct panels:
-
Left Panel: A woman wearing radio headphones seated at a table alongside an early tabletop crystal or vacuum tube radio set, listening intently. Top banner reads in Hebrew: לשנה טובה תכתבו (L'Shanah Tovah Tikatevu – "May you be inscribed for a good year").
-
Middle Panel: A young girl in a red beret walking down a city street carrying a bouquet of flowers and a gift box.
-
Right Panel: A gentleman in a suit and straw boater hat speaking into an early carbon microphone on a desktop stand. At his feet is a Yiddish stanza in a framed speech box.
Yiddish Text Translation (Bottom Right Panel):
In Yiddish: אין ראדיא רעדט איר ליבסטער, עס קלינגט זיין קול מיט פריידען: "א גוטער יאר דיר, ליבסטע! א גוטער יאר אונז ביידען!"
English Translation: "Over the radio speaks your beloved, His voice rings out with joy: 'A good year to you, my dearest! A good year to us both!'"
