For sale is an 18th-century hand-forged wrought iron rushlight holder with an integrated candle socket counterweight, set into a turned wooden base.

This piece represents classic pre-industrial early American and European domestic lighting technology. The blacksmith-crafted iron mechanism features a spring-tension scissor action (rush nip) designed to hold dried rushes soaked in tallow. The curved arm acts as a counterweight to hold the jaws firmly shut and terminates in a hand-rolled sheet-iron candle socket, allowing the user to burn either an inexpensive rush or a more costly tallow/wax candle.

Authenticity & Construction Markers:

This piece displays key features of authentic pre-industrial blacksmithing:

  • Authentic Hand-Peened Rivet
  • Seamed Candle Socket (hand-rolled sheet iron with authentic overlap seam and forge-welded join, rather than seamless modern tubing or cast metal).
  • Hand-Forged Taper & Grain (vertical stem tapers smoothly from square section near the pivot into a round tang at the base). The iron displays natural hand-hammer smoothing and organic fibrous grain typical of genuine 18th-century wrought iron, free from artificial casting pitting.

Base Note: The wrought iron shaft is mounted into a turned softwood base. As is common with early lighting artifacts whose original wooden blocks rotted or broke over centuries of use, the wooden base is an associated vintage replacement added to display the original 18th-century ironwork.

Condition Report: Good antique condition. The ironwork remains structurally sound with an untouched, dark oxidized patina and light surface rust consistent with age and hand-forged iron. Turned wooden base shows light surface wear and minor scuffs with a stable fit to the iron shaft. Please review all photos for exact condition.
