Featuring a classic, thick free-blown clear pear-shaped glass globe permanently fitted into a ventilated brass top chimney cowl and lower base ring with original plaster cement. The top cap is fitted with a heavy, solid rolled-edge ring bail handle attached via a riveted brass strap.

The lower base housing unlatches to reveal an independent brass fuel reservoir featuring an authentic threaded double-tube whale oil burner complete with original cotton wicks. The secure threaded collar assembly indicates superior mid-19th-century craftsmanship intended to prevent fuel leakage during transport. Weighing over 3 lbs, this lantern offers outstanding structural presence with an untouched visual appeal throughout, displaying warm natural brass patina, light period wear, and historic verdigris in hidden seams.

Authenticity Assessment This piece displays premium mid-19th-century construction markers throughout. The double-tube burner features thin, un-threaded vertical copper/brass tubes set into a threaded brass collar font, engineered specifically for thick whale oil fuel rather than lighter kerosene. Unlike common drop-in variants, the threaded neck provided a leak-resistant seal designed for maritime or mobile use. The thick pear-shaped globe is fixed at the base junction with period-correct plaster/putty sealant surrounding the glass edge, visible inside the lower rim reservoir. The brass features hand-crimped seams, rolled rim wire, hand-punched circular ventilation holes along the cap and base chimney skirt, and natural oxidation with verdigris in the inner burner well. The clear glass globe exhibits seed bubbles, light mold lines, and hand-blown irregularities consistent with antebellum glass production.
